Zero to Sixty Sketchbook School

Zero to Sixty is not your typical drawing course. Whereas most programs focus only on how-to-draw skills, such as perspective or shading, this curriculum covers what-to-draw skills, which are the biggest, untapped opportunities most artists have to improve.

Most of us only have 10 or 15 minutes to draw at a time, especially on the go, but too often that is spent on guesswork. That’s where we’ll take a step back and study themes from illustration, cinema, and design so you can make simple, effective decisions on the spot. Even if you’re a beginner, you’ll develop a playbook that you can use to sketch anything, anywhere, and you’ll learn the best ways to practice to get the most out of your time.

In doing so, you’ll be on a new creative trajectory next month that saves you years of frustration down the line. Your progress will accelerate, and you’ll feel confident drawing better, faster, and more often.

Zero to Sixty takes place online, but offers far more than a pile of videos you watch in your own time. Instead, we'll work together in both small group and 1-1 settings so you can cover as much ground as possible over the next month.

Each week focuses on one of five core lessons, which is explained over a live video call (Tuesdays 8 PM EST).​ These are recorded and shared afterward. You'll then receive a corresponding assignment that takes about 2 hours to complete.

As you work on each assignment, you'll have access to open office hours on Thursdays (noon and 7 PM EST) and a private Slack community with other artists.

Zero to Sixty is designed to be challenging but accomplishable, even if you have a busy schedule. Outside of our weekly meeting times, expect to draw for about 2 hours each week or about 20 minutes per day. If you fall behind, don't worry. We'll find a way for you to catch up and finish the course strong.

Like any true drawing course, Zero to Sixty can be completed with basic materials: a large sketchbook (or loose copy paper), a pack of index cards, and any old pen that flows well. You'll receive a short list of recommendations upon registration.

Zero to Sixty is an observational drawing course with material that overlaps with urban sketching, comics, animation, and reportage illustration. But, rather than learn a style, you will develop your own approach to these disciplines that leverages your unique strengths, values, and interests.

Intro to Urban Sketching covers three key methods you can use to start drawing your best life. We begin with some observational techniques that anyone can learn, even if they're a beginner, and then we develop a repeatable method to start and finish quick sketches on the go.

Totally–you're in the right place! Intro to Urban Sketching is designed to help beginners learn simple methods they can use to draw from life and have fun along the way. More experienced artists will learn ways to level up their craft and take more creative risks.

Nope–simply come as you are! Sketchbooks and pens will be available for you to use during class, and you're welcome to bring any pages home to share with family and friends.

Unless noted, all classes begin at noon under the clock in the main hall of Grand Central Terminal. (Look for someone waving a sketchbook on the side facing the Apple Store.)

Please plan to arrive ~10 minutes early as trains are often delayed.

Materials will be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own.

Class runs for about 90 minutes and operates like a tour, so be prepared to stand and save coffee, tea, and food for later.

Participants interested in further study are encouraged to join Zero to Sixty Sketchbook School, which is a 30-day program that covers more advanced on-location drawing methods.

Crayon Club is a community of artists who meet at different locations in NYC, draw from life, and share their work. Our events include urban sketching sessions, day workshops, and group happy hours. Most of these are free, and all are open to artists of all skill levels.

There are no formal requirements to participate; however, we kindly ask that you RSVP for any events you wish to join so we can communicate updates to the right people and anticipate attendance.

As you complete registration, you will have the option to stay posted on upcoming meetups through a weekly email newsletter.

Our most common meetups are on-location drawing sessions, which take place at different landmarks in NYC. Typically, we draw for an hour, break to share our sketchbooks, and then repeat the process once more. These meetups are free and open to everyone, so you're welcome to come and go as you please; however, we ask that you RSVP in advance so we can communicate updates.

Our monthly happy hours at Recess Grove are great opportunities to meet fellow artists and share inspiration. Please bring a sketchbook. Seating is limited and sometimes sells out, so please register in advance.

Please bring your own drawing materials, as there are no items available to borrow on location. Also consider the outdoor conditions while packing, as a portable stool, sweater, sunscreen, hat, etc., can make a big difference depending on the weather.

You are solely responsible for any mess or paint stains, so please be considerate of the surroundings and clean up your workspace before leaving.
